Skills for Life at LEVC
As we journey through National Apprenticeship Week 2024, we're excited to spotlight our LEVC apprentices and their stories of growth. 'Skills for Life' isn't just a phrase—it's what our apprentices experience every day. Let's dive into their insights and discoveries. Today the spotlight is on Amaan, who is completing an apprenticeship in Product Design & Development Engineering.
Q: How has your apprenticeship experience contributed to your personal and professional growth?
A: During my time at LEVC, I experienced significant growth both personally and professionally. On the professional front, I developed a deeper understanding of the electric vehicle industry, including the technical aspects of the vehicle and production. Personally, I've grown in my ability to handle pressure and meet deadlines, which has increased my resilience and adaptability. The experience has also helped me to develop my communication skills, making me more effective in presenting ideas and collaborating with others.
Q: Can you share a specific project or task that challenged you and helped you develop important life skills?
A: A specific project that was particularly challenging and helpful in my personal and professional growth was the FE battery project. This project involved working collaboratively with a diverse team of engineers, where I played a key role in ensuring clear and effective communication throughout the team. My responsibilities included working on the FE battery using various software tools, such as DSA and CANalyser, which not only enhanced my technical skills but also my ability to adapt to different technologies. The primary aim of this thorough testing was to ensure that the battery could be successfully implemented on the production line. This experience taught me the importance of precise communication, teamwork, and the application of technical knowledge in a practical setting, skills that are invaluable in my professional development.
Q: How do you see the skills you've gained during your apprenticeship benefiting you in future career opportunities?
A: The skills I've gained during my apprenticeship at LEVC are foundational for my future career. The in-depth technical knowledge of electric vehicles, especially in areas like battery testing and implementation, positions me well for roles in electric vehicle design and production. Beyond technical expertise, enhanced communication and teamwork skills, developed through working with engineers, all this will be crucial in any future projects or roles. Furthermore, the adaptability and continuous learning mindset I developed in this fast-evolving industry will help me stay competitive in the field.
Q: What advice would you give to others considering apprenticeships as a pathway for skill development and career advancement?
A: I would advise others considering apprenticeships to view them as a valuable opportunity for both skill development and career advancement. It's important to choose an apprenticeship in a field that genuinely interests you and aligns with your career aspirations. This ensures that the time and effort you invest will be meaningful and rewarding. Take full advantage of the unique blend of academic learning and hands-on experience that apprenticeships offer. This combination not only increases your practical skills but also deepens your theoretical understanding. Networking with professionals and being open to mentorship can provide invaluable insights for your career. Finally, maintain a balance between your work commitments and academic studies.
Q: What strategies have you found effective in balancing work, training, and personal life during your apprenticeship?
A: As a degree apprentice at LEVC, working four days a week and spending one day at Coventry University, I've found several strategies crucial for maintaining a balance between work, training, and personal life. Effective time management being key. Putting together a time plan, allocating specific times for work tasks, University assignments and personal activities. This helps me stay organised and ensures I am meeting my responsibilities in all areas.
Q: How has the apprenticeship program contributed to your ability to adapt to new technologies and industry changes?
A: The apprenticeship program at LEVC has been significant in enhancing my ability to adapt to new technologies and industry changes, especially as a degree apprentice currently on rotation across various areas within the business. This rotational experience has exposed me to different aspects of the electric vehicle industry, from engineering to production and quality. Each rotation has required me to quickly learn and use different technologies and tools, significantly improving my technical adaptability. For instance, in the production department, I gained hands-on experience with the latest manufacturing technologies, and gaining a deeper understanding of how the vehicle is built.
